Understanding the ground under your feet is a huge part of your "Mindful Mowing" approach, especially since North Charleston's soil can be tricky compared to other parts of the state. Because we are in the lower Atlantic Coastal Plain, our soil is heavily influenced by ancient marine sediments and river deposits. Here is the breakdown of what defines the soil in our area: Primary Characteristics
High Water Table: This is the most defining characteristic for North Charleston. In many areas, the water table can be as shallow as 1 to 3 feet below the surface, especially during the wetter months.
Slow Drainage: Due to the flat terrain and heavy clay or organic layers, water often ponds rather than draining away.
Acidity: Most native soils here are naturally very strongly acid to medium acid (pH levels often ranging from 4.5 to 5.5). For the warm-season grasses you groom-Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine-you'll often find lime is necessary to bring that pH up to a healthier 6.0-6.5 range. Soft & Loosely Compacted: These soils shift and settle easily, which is why foundation and drainage issues are so common for homeowners in the Park Circle and Hanahan areas.
